„Ears of the Margin: Listening to Brazilian Sound, Ecology & Resistance“
Lecture Demonstration & Listening Session
with Rafaele Andrade

program:
How can sound, instrument-making and music respond to political and environmental struggles in Brazil?
In this 60-minute lecture demonstration and listening session, composer and performer Rafaele Andrade explores contemporary Brazilian sound practices as ways of connecting people, sharing memories and expressing resistance. Looking beyond common ideas of technology and industrial production, the session explores how instrument-making and sound design relate to land, political struggles and cultural memory.
The session begins with a live acoustic and electronic demonstration of Andrade’s custom-built string instrument Knurl. This is followed by a three-part listening journey through experimental sounds and compositions from Brazil.
The first part explores Indigenous rights, struggles over land and ways of relating to the environment through sound. The second focuses on feminism and how female pioneers and contemporary experimental artists are creating new possibilities in electronic and electroacoustic music. The third looks at instrument-making and material experimentation, exploring how artists have transformed local materials and ideas into entirely new acoustic worlds.
Combining live performance with critical reflection, the session invites listeners to question the idea that creativity must always be about something new and to consider what it means to make sounds and instruments today.
The evening concludes with drinks and food from Brazil and around in the cosy attic at GRUND1535, overlooking the mountains (bring warm clothes as the room is not heated).
